The challenge of packaging design.

In a market saturated with choice, label and packaging design is a powerful tool for capturing attention, communicating brand value and differentiating a product from its competitors.

When the time comes to update a brand’s image, one important question arises: restyling or rebranding? Both strategies can revitalise a product or brand, but they respond to very different needs.

What is brand restyling?

Restyling is particularly suitable for established brands that need to update their image without losing the recognition and values they have built over time.

From wine labels to packaging for food, beverages and gourmet products, a successful restyling should modernise the design while retaining the elements that make the brand recognisable. This may involve changes to typography, the logo, label architecture, materials, finishes, colour or the way information is organised.

The objective is not simply to change the design, but to evolve a brand without breaking the connection it already has with consumers.

When does a brand need rebranding?

Rebranding involves a more profound transformation. It may be the right approach when a brand needs to redefine its positioning, reach new audiences, enter new markets or move away from an identity that no longer represents the product effectively.

In these cases, the project can encompass everything from naming and visual identity to label design, packaging, brand architecture and communication materials.

A well-planned rebranding can build a new perception of the brand, differentiate it from competitors and create an identity with the potential to grow and evolve over time.

Restyling and rebranding for wine brands

In the wine industry, this decision can be particularly delicate. Many wineries manage brands with decades of history and strong recognition among distributors and consumers. Updating their image requires finding the right balance between heritage, recognition and contemporary design.

At Sidecar Design, we have worked for almost 30 years on branding, restyling, rebranding and packaging for wineries and wine brands. Among these projects is our collaboration spanning nearly two decades with Grupo ARCO / United Wineries, developing work for historic wine brands including Federico Paternina, Bodegas Lagunilla, Rioja Santiago and Marqués de la Concordia.

Discover more about our work and long-standing collaboration with United Wineries and its wine brands.

Restyling or rebranding? Strategy should determine the answer

Before making a decision, it is essential to analyse the real situation of the brand. Which elements still work? What do consumers recognise? How has the market evolved? What perception should the brand build for the years ahead?

The answer should never be based purely on aesthetics. Design should respond to a clear brand strategy and help the product compete more effectively, communicate its value and build a recognisable identity.

In an increasingly competitive environment, packaging is also one of the most important points of contact between a product and its consumer. From a bottle of wine to a food product or fragrance, every decision — typography, materials, finishes, colour, structure and visual storytelling — contributes to the perception of the brand.

Branding and packaging backed by experience

At Sidecar Design, we have spent almost 30 years developing naming, branding, restyling, rebranding, label design and packaging for wine, beverage, food and other brands.

Every project requires a different solution. Some brands need to evolve; others need to start again. Our role is to understand what should remain, what needs to change and how to turn that strategy into a distinctive identity.

If you are considering updating a brand, launching a new product or redesigning an existing packaging range, tell us about your project. We will help you determine whether the right solution is restyling, rebranding or an entirely new brand strategy.

In a market saturated with choice, label and packaging design is a powerful tool for capturing attention, communicating brand value and differentiating a product from its competitors.
